Locksmith at Cancun Airport and the Rental Car Lots

Arrival time: 25 to 35 minutes from downtown.

Cancun airport and the rental car lots around it generate a very particular kind of call, and it is almost always the same one: a set of rental car keys that is either inside the car or gone entirely, and a person with a flight, a check-in time or a family in the back seat.

There is a detail worth knowing before you call anyone. The rental agencies are not the only route to a solution, and often not the fastest. Their standard answer to a lost key is to send someone from their own depot, which in high season can mean a long wait, followed by a replacement key charge that has very little to do with what a key costs. You do not need the agency's authorisation to have a car you have rented opened. You need to show it is yours to open: the rental agreement and your passport or driving licence.

If the key is locked inside, the job is straightforward — wedge and rod on the door frame, no damage, usually under fifteen minutes once the technician is at the car. If the key is actually lost, we can cut and program a replacement at the car for most makes, which is where the time saving becomes dramatic: the car drives away instead of being recovered.

You should still tell the rental company. They will want to know a working key exists that they did not issue, and it is better they hear it from you at the counter than discover it later. But that conversation can happen after you are moving, not instead of it.

Access to the lots varies. Some are inside the airport perimeter with their own security, some are on the highway a few minutes away, and the rules differ by company. Tell us which company and which lot when you call so the technician goes to the right barrier and knows who to speak to.

The other regular airport call is the long-stay parking, where the pattern is different: someone comes back from ten days away, the car has been sitting in the heat, and either the key was left inside on the way out or the battery in the fob is flat. A flat fob is not a locksmith job at all in most cases and we will tell you so on the phone rather than charging you to drive out and say it.

Arrival is twenty-five to thirty-five minutes from downtown, longer if the airport road is backed up, which it reliably is when several long-haul flights land together in the afternoon.

Frequently asked questions · Airport & rental car lots

Do I need the rental company's permission?

No. You need to show the car is yours to open: the rental agreement plus your passport or driving licence. Tell the company afterwards — they should know a key exists that they did not issue.

I lost the only key to my rental. Can you cut a new one here?

For most makes, yes, cut and programmed at the car. Give us make, model and year on the phone and we will confirm before coming out.

Is it faster than waiting for the agency?

Usually by a wide margin, especially in high season. We come to the car; they send someone from a depot and then often want the car recovered.

Which lot do I say I'm in?

The rental company name and the lot. Access rules differ between them and the technician needs to know which barrier he is going to.

My key fob has no battery. Is that a locksmith job?

Usually not — most cars have a hidden mechanical key inside the fob and a start position that works without the battery. We will walk you through it on the phone at no charge.

We call back in under 5 minutes.
