Costa Mujeres is the newest resort corridor on this coast, north of Playa Mujeres along the road toward Isla Blanca. Ten years ago there was almost nothing here; now it is a line of large all-inclusive resorts with residential and condo development filling in behind them.

For a locksmith, new construction changes the profile of the work. The hardware is modern — electronic locks, keypads, multi-point doors — so the failures are electronic rather than mechanical. Flat batteries, keypads that stop responding, codes that were changed by a previous guest and not recorded. Almost none of that requires anything dramatic; a good share of it is solved on the phone before anyone gets in a van, and we would rather do that than charge you for a fifty-minute drive to change a battery.

Distance is the real constraint. Forty to fifty-five minutes from downtown, and there is a distance charge because this is well outside the dense part of the municipality. Both numbers come to you on the phone before anyone leaves. If what you have is a flat keypad battery and a torch, it is genuinely worth letting us talk you through it first.

The other regular call out here is vehicles. The resorts are far enough apart that most people staying in this corridor have a rental car, and the car parks are large, hot and full of vehicles that sit unused for a week at a time. Keys locked inside and flat fob batteries are the two everyday problems, in that order.

What we handle here is the condos, the residences and the rentals behind the resort line, where there is no front desk to call at midnight.

Access is gated almost everywhere, and out here the gates are strict. Tell security a locksmith is coming as soon as you hang up; at this distance a wasted trip is an hour and a half rather than twenty minutes.
